Jornal, if it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck it’s a duck is a periodical with nine editions, from Jornal #0 to Jornal #8, published every six months since May 2021. The editorial project is the result of a collaboration between artists/teachers and researchers Ana João Romana, Catarina Leitão, Isabel Baraona and Susana Gaudêncio, members of LIDA, the Art and Design Research Laboratory at the Caldas da Rainha School of Art and Design, ESAD.CR.
The Journal’s nine issues were dedicated to critical reflection on independent publishing and artist’s books, fostering collaboration between artists, publishers and researchers, students and teachers who produce and study these objects. The origin of the Journal, If it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck it’s a duck was based on two editorial projects developed by leading schools, such as the Journal of Artists’ Books (ed. Columbia College Chicago) and Sans Niveau Ni Mètre (Cabinet du Livre d’Artiste/Université Rennes 2).
The Journal’s usual format of 8 A4 pages consists of an article by invitation of the editorial board, two articles chosen blindly by the editorial board (peer review) and a visual essay in a call to the community of ESAD.CR Master’s students.
With the publication of issues seven and eight, we celebrated the Jornal project by creating a format that was different from the previous ones. For issue seven, we invited Ricardo Castro to take on the role of editor. In the case of Jornal 8, each of the editors invited a student and an artist to participate with visual, written or mixed essays, thus contributing to a vibrant publication that strengthens the dialogue between the artistic community and academia.
For the next issue, to be published in spring 2025, we are starting a new partnership between LIDA/ ESAD.CR and the Doctorate in Contemporary Art of the College of Arts of the University of Coimbra, DAC-UC. We invite PhD students from the College of Arts and Masters students from ESAD.CR to submit proposals that fit in with their individual research, broadening the themes to contemporary artistic practices within the so-called Artist Based Research.
