Ana João Romana has a degree in Painting (Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon), a post-graduate degree in Museology and Heritage (New University of Lisbon), a Master’s degree in Printmaking (Royal College of Art), and a PhD in the field of Artist’s Book (University of Algarve).
She has been exhibiting regularly since 1996 in Portugal, and also: the United Kingdom, Finland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Japan, China, Brazil, the United States of America, and Dubai.
She has been awarded grants from the Fine Arts Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Artworks Wales, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Foundation for Science and Technology.
She collaborated with the Educational Service of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museums between 2000 and 2018.
She has been teaching in public art education since 1994 and has been a lecturer at the School of Arts & Design – Caldas da Rainha since 2007.
