Emanuel Brás (1967) is a professor, researcher and photographer. He has been teaching photography at ESAD since 2000. Firstly as Invited Assistant until 2013, and after that as Adjunct Teacher. His areas of interest as a researcher and photographer focus on landscape photography, particularly using photography to: depict the transformation of the territory; and, as art practice of engagement with the ephemeral character of landscape.

He has been working with agricultural landscapes since 2009, and more recently, with the vitality of plants on disregarded spaces. Currently at LiDA, he is involved in two research projects based on the landscape body of work of photographer João Francisco Camacho. He holds a specialist title in the area of “Audio-Visuals and Media Production – Photography” [public examination in 2013]. He pursued doctoral studies (not completed) in photography and landscape at the School of Art, Design, and Architecture of Plymouth University, UK, between 2009 and 2014. He holds a Master’s degree in Arts: Image and Communication from Goldsmiths College, London, in 2000, and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Coimbra in 1997.

He initiated solo exhibitions in 1997. Since 1999, with the exhibition Paisagens das lagoas de Vela e Braças: fotografia in situ his work has progressively focused on the issues on contemporary landscapes. In 2009 presented the exhibition lugares de afecção, at Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (exhibition that toured in Portugal until 2017). In 2012 he exhibited the begining of the the series Reservatório de mutações at the Museu do Neo-Realismo, Vila Franca de Xira. In 2013, he published the photographic essay Construção do lugar; determinações do olhar. His work is represented in several national collections BESart, Colecção Nacional de Fotografia, Fundação PLMJ, (…).
