Fernando Galrito was born in May 1960 in Samora Correia. He has a background in Cinema, Animation, and Theatre. Graduated in Anthropology, MA in Culture and Information Technologies, DEA in Animation, Specialist Title in Film and Media Direction and Production. Concludes his Ph.D. in Communication, Culture, and Arts | Animation from Screen to Gallery.
He teaches Animation, Cinema and Video, Curatorship, and Creative Laboratory at Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha – ESAD.CR, in the courses of Sound and Image, Visual Arts, and Cultural Programming and Production, where he has developed pedagogical and experimental methodology between the Moving Image, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts.
He is a guest professor at several universities in Europe, Africa, America, and Asia. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Festival de Animação de Lisboa | MONSTRA and MONSTRINHA since the year 2000. He is a member and researcher of LIDA (Research Laboratory of Design and Arts) from ESAR.CR | Polytechnic of Leiria, member of the scientific council of CONFIA (International Conf. of Illustration and Animation).
As a researcher, he explores and develops formal and non-formal pedagogical methodologies of the moving image for children, teenagers, universities, and for trainers. He is the author of transdisciplinary and transversal works of different arts presented in Portugal and more than 50 countries in Europe, Africa, America, and Asia. He conducts programs, conferences, workshops, and communications in several European countries and also in Argentina, Brazil, Mozambique, Timor, China, Japan, and Cuba and is also the author of articles for catalogs and national and international publications. Between 1987 and 2005 he coordinated CITEN | Center for Experimentation in Image and Movement of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. During the same period, he was a collaborator and trainer at the Children’s Art Center of the same Foundation.
He has directed animation films, documentaries, and shorts since his youth, some of which have won national and international awards.
