Isabel Aboim Inglez (b.1971) has a PhD in Cinema-Design from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (2016) with the thesis “Drawing as a constructor of space in (animation) cinema” and a degree in Cinema-Direction from the Lisbon School of Theatre and Cinema (2000), Cinema-IMAGE from the Lisbon School of Theatre and Cinema (1993). She has developed her own work in film directing (fiction and animation), directing photography, light design and creation for theatre, photography and illustration.
She has worked in cinema as director of photography, assistant director, assistant stage manager and in the image teams of names such as Wim Wenders, Fonseca e Costa and João Cesar Monteiro and Pedro Caldas. In theatre, she has designed the light for productions by Carlos Pimenta, Fernanda Lapa and Luís Castro and Teresa Sobral and Rui Pina Coelho, with whom she has also collaborated in the creation.
All her films since 1998 have been supported by ICA and presented at various national and international festivals, winning a number of awards. The most recent is Growing Pains- A film in Seven Acts’ 20’ (2022), an experimental film that is currently in national/international circulation, represented by Portugal Film.
She regularly exhibits in the field of photography, taking part in group projects and solo exhibitions, including ‘A Imagem Contextualizada’ at the Arquivo fotográfico, ‘Prata da casa’ as group exhibitions, and ‘Casaaabsoluta’ (arquivo fotográfico), ‘Transparências’ (Pickpoket gallery – supported by the FGC), ‘ARCO’ (part A and B) and ‘HIATO’ in various venues in Lisbon and the Quase gallery in Porto. She was also present with a videographic project at the ‘Studiolo XI’ exhibition at the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation. Her images are included in associated publications and catalogues.
Since 1995, she has been teaching photography, animation and design, first at the António Arroio Artistic Secondary School (Photography-Video Cinema), at ACARTE/CITEM-Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (animation) and since 2005 at ESAD.CR (Image and Design). Between 2018.04 and 2023.11 she was coordinator of the Sound and Image degree programme at the same school.
