José Manuel Frade has a degree in Ceramics and Glass Engineering, a Master’s and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Technology from the University of Aveiro, and is a coordinating professor at the School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. He has about 25 years of teaching experience in undergraduate, master’s, and technological specialization courses in the areas of Ceramics and Glass Design, Industrial Design, Space Design, Product Design, Digital Prototyping and 3D Design and Industrial Production Engineering, where he has taught various integrated curricular units in materials science and technology, industrial manufacturing processes, innovation, eco-design and sustainable development.
He was Director of the School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha between 2004 and 2007, president of the pedagogic council of the same school for several mandates, and member of several other bodies of ESAD.CR and IPLeiria such as General Council, Representatives Council, Scientific-Technical Council, Coordination of Scientific area, Coordination and Scientific-Pedagogic Commissions of Courses. He is a member of the research group LIDA – Laboratório de Investigação em Design e Artes, has already collaborated in some research projects in CDRSP – Centro para o Desenvolvimento Rápido e Sustentado de Produto e integrates the research group CICECO – Centro de Investigação em Materiais Cerâmicos e Compósitos da Universidade de Aveiro.
He is the author and co-author of several books or respective chapters, national and international publications, conference proceedings, and industrial property records (patents, utility models, and design models) in the areas of glass science and technology, ceramic science and technology, engineering and product development, additive manufacturing, eco-design, and sustainability. He also has professional experience as a process and product engineer in the sectors of the glass industry, exploration and transformation of minerals and ornamental rocks, and chemical industry.
