Miguel Santos is an artist and a research fellow at the Arts and Design Research Lab (LIDA), ESAD.CR-Polytechnic of Leiria. His practice intersects art and science methodologies to investigate subjectivity in its interdependency with nature. His current interests are in the production of works of art for nonhuman beings and geomorphic systems to decentre the human importance in the world.
In 2011, he was awarded a PhD in Fine Arts by Sheffield Hallam University, which aimed at understanding the value of artists employing noise (disturbances) in the production of interfaces (i.e., films, videos, photographs, sculptures, etc.) and its implications on the observer’s interpretation and formation of the work of art.
He participated in several artist-in-residence projects, for example: at the California Arts Institute (USA, 2009); in Longyearbyen, Svalbard Islands (Norway, 2009); in synthetic biology at the German Cancer Research Centre (Germany, 2013-14); in Filed_Notes-Hybrid Matters, at Kilpisjärvi Biological Station (Finland, 2016); in water entanglements, with a Leverhulme Trust artist-in-residence grant, at the Geography Department, Durham University (UK, 2015-16).
