MASI_OSSO Residencies are an intensive artistic practice-based research programme within the Master’s in Arts of Sound and Image (ESAD.CR), developed through an ongoing partnership with Associação Cultural OSSO (S. Gregório, Caldas da Rainha). This edition was organised into three residency periods, each lasting five days, corresponding to different fields of practice and artistic mentoring (sound arts, photography, and cinema/documentary). Each residency combined fieldwork, studio production and daily collective critique. The programme brought together students, invited artists (Ângela da Ponte, António Júlio Duarte and Tiago Hespanha), and ESAD.CR faculty members and LiDA researchers, strengthening its pedagogical and scientific dimension and fostering the involvement of the ESAD.CR community.
These residencies are framed as spaces for intervention and reflection on landscape today, and they are intended to be integrated into the future exploratory project Territory-Archive. Sound and image practices thus operate as tools for observation, documentation and the critical and poetic re-signification of the territory. The programme culminates in public presentations and conversations—first at OSSO and, subsequently, at ESAD.CR and at the CCC – Centro Cultural e de Congressos, within the framework of iNTERVALOS – Encontros e Mostra de Cinema Português—promoting institutional impact, community engagement and knowledge transfer.

Sound Arts
What is an instrument?
Ângela Da Ponte
Drawing on traditional instruments from the region, and potentially on local objects and materials capable of producing sound, this residency explores the question: what is an instrument?, and how an object carrying cultural identity can merge with other contexts or be reintegrated into a different environment. Does it lose its sonic identity?

Reports of the end and the beginning
Tiago Hespanha
“Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to see ice.” — from One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez
Filming what cannot be seen. How much of what we see is imagined? In this workshop, I propose working with the documentary gesture through imaginary elements.
