The present study aims to digitize and analyze the collection of stamps of the National Palace of Mafra in order to measure, identify and classify the letterforms and graphic ornaments used in the reproduction of liturgical music books. In this way is intended to initiate a study to support research projects in the areas of Graphic Design and Typography, particularly in the design of typefaces, contributing to the preservation of and access to iconographic heritage. This analysis will constitute the first approach to broader research on the production and musical edition of the works of Cantochão do Convento de Mafra, developed in partnership with the National Palace of Mafra (PNM), the Arts and Design Research Laboratory of the Polytechnic of Leiria (LIDA) and the Center for Studies in Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM) of the New University of Lisbon.

The digitization of the stamp collection of the National Palace of Mafra (PNM) intends to initiate a study that will support research projects in the areas of Graphic Design and Typography. The PNM’s stamp collection is considered unique by its magnitude at the international level, so its study and analysis are of great national and international relevance in the area of Typography.

This study is part of a larger interdisciplinary research project, which will be developed in collaboration with the National Palace of Mafra (PNM) and the Center for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM) of the New University of Lisbon. It aims to involve the participation of young people and students through the identification of cultural and historical heritage that supports research projects in the areas of Graphic Design and Typography and the creation of scholarships for the participation of master’s students in scientific research activities.
